Caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease (PD) can feel overwhelming, especially when you're also supporting many other individuals.

PD brings unique challenges that affect how a person moves, thinks, feels, eats, and takes medication. 

This course designed for people who work in senior living communities.

This course will give you helpful, easy-to-follow guidance to care for someone with Parkinson’s, focusing on: 

Mood & Cognition – understanding changes in mood, memory, and thinking 

Nutrition & Swallowing – recognizing swallowing issues and promoting safe eating

Target Audience

This course is designed for people who work in senior living communities. Social workers and nurses will be able to receive continuing education credit for this course.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the activity, learners will be able to

  • Describe the key motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and how they affect daily care in senior living communities.
  • Demonstrate strategies for supporting individuals with Parkinson’s who experience changes in mood, memory, thinking, swallowing issues, and nutrition.
  • Escalate observed mood, memory, thinking, swallowing, and nutrition changes in Parkinson’s patients to appropriate interprofessional team members or supervisors.

Joan Gardner RN BSN is the National Co-Director of the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Community Partners in Parkinson’s Care program, which provides Parkinson’s education to senior communities and home care agencies across the U.S.  Previously Joan was a Nurse Clinician for 30 yours at the Struthers Parkinson’s Center in Golden Valley, MN, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence. Joan has served as nursing faculty for the Parkinson’s Foundation’s interprofessional Team Training course and has co-authored numerous Parkinson’s resources and publications.  She has been a member of the International Movement Disorder Society work group on Interdisciplinary Care in Parkinson’s, and currently serves on the steering committee for the Management of Movement Disorders Study Group.

Rose Wichmann is currently co-director of Parkinson’s Foundation’s Community Partners in Parkinson’s Care program. She is the past director of Struthers Parkinson’s Center in Minneapolis MN and has over 35 years of experience as a physical therapist specializing in treatment of Parkinson’s and related disorders.  Rose is a frequent speaker and has co –authored several publications including the American Academy of Neurology. book titled “Navigating Life with Parkinson’s Disease".

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Parkinson’s Foundation is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Parkinson’s Foundation maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00  ASWB continuing education credits.
