Genetic Counseling and Testing

Parkinson’s Foundation Genetic Counseling and Testing Program seeks to increase awareness and educate healthcare professionals about genetic testing and counseling for Parkinson’s disease.

This free, self-paced series aims to provide a basic level of understanding of the genetic epidemiology of the disease and the key genes that are clinically relevant to PD.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the key genes that are important for Parkinson’s disease and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Improve clinical care by understanding which genes and variants have clinical actionability, including potential medication and treatment decisions, qualification for clinical trials, referral for family member testing, and referral for Gaucher’s disease evaluation.
  • Identify resources for genetic testing and counseling.
  • Increase their ability to discuss heritability of PD, genetic predisposition, and risk for passing on PD to family members and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
