Genetic Testing Platforms for Parkinson's Disease 2022

Welcome to the Genetic Testing Platforms for Parkinson’s disease 2022 course. The goal of the course is to recognize the available avenues for Genetic Testing in Parkinson’s disease, identify the types of genetic testing available, locate testing information, demonstrate ability to choose the best panel.

Designed to view on screen and/or listen on the go, these short lessons provide key information to provide an overview of the various genetic testing platforms available for PD.  

To receive your Continuing Education of 0.25 credits, you must complete all 5 lessons and a quiz.

First, take the pre-course quiz with five questions. There are no expectations for you to answer the questions correctly!

Next, start with Welcome to Genetic Testing Platforms for Parkinson’s Disease. Pre- and post-course readings referenced in the video and other resources will be available for you to view and download at the end of the course.

At the end of the course, you will be required to take a post-course quiz with 2 questions and attain a passing grade of 100% or higher. You will also need to complete the online evaluation to receive your certificate. If you are not taking this course for CE credit, you will receive a certificate of completion after completing the quizzes and evaluation.

As knowledge application is measured by adapting change in practice, you will also receive a 60-day follow-up evaluation to assess any change in your practice and interprofessional care strategies.

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Recognize the available avenues for Genetic Testing in Parkinson’s disease (physician and consumer initiated, DTC and research testing)
  • Identify the types of genetic testing available for PD (targeted variant, single gene, multigene) panel, whole exome and whole genome)
  • Recall which tests include genetic counseling
  • Identify areas of misinterpretation in testing results from these platforms.

Jeanine Schulze, MS, CGC: Genetic Counselor Indiana University School of Medicine

Biography: Jeanine Schulze is licensed and board-certified genetic counselor in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine. She works on a variety of Parkinson’s disease research projects, including the PPMI and PD GENEration studies. Jeanine has co-authored publications on the genetics of Parkinson disease, the relationship of Gaucher disease to Parkinson’s disease, and outcomes of telehealth models in genetic research and genetic counseling. Her research interests also include the impact of genetic counseling services in individuals and families with Parkinson disease, and educating the health care community about Parkinson’s disease testing and genetic counseling. She is currently a member of the Parkinson’s Working Group of the National Society of Genetic Counselors Neurogenetics Special Interest Group. In addition, she serves on the ClinGen Parkinson’s Disease Gene Curation Expert Panel and serves as an advisor to the Movement Disorder Society Task Force on Recommendations for Clinical Genetic Testing in Parkinson’s Disease.
