Genetic Counseling and Testing

Parkinson’s Foundation Genetic Counseling and Testing Program seeks to increase awareness and educate healthcare professionals about genetic testing and counseling for Parkinson’s disease. This free, self-paced four course series aims at providing a basic level of understanding about the genetic epidemiology of the disease and the key genes that are clinically relevant to PD.

This program has four courses:

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the key genes that are important for Parkinson’s disease and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Improve clinical care by understanding which genes and variants have clinical actionability including potential medication and treatment decisions, qualification for clinical trials, referral for family member testing and referral for Gaucher’s disease evaluation.
  • Identify resources for genetic testing and counseling.
  • Increase their ability to discuss heritability of PD, genetic predisposition and risk for passing on PD to family members and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.

FACULTY BIOS:

Martha A. Nance, MD
Clinical Geneticist Struthers Parkinson's Center, Minneapolis, MN

Martha Nance MD is a neurologist and geneticist; she has been the Medical Director of Struthers Parkinson’s Center, a Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, since 2000. She serves on the Steering Committee of the PD GENEration study and is the Chair of the PSG Genetics and Environment Working Group.

 

Jeanine Schulze, MS, CGC
Genetic Counselor Indiana University School of Medicine

Jeanine Schulze is licensed and board-certified genetic counselor in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine. She works on a variety of Parkinson’s disease research projects, including the PPMI and PD GENEration studies. Jeanine has co-authored publications on the genetics of Parkinson disease, the relationship of Gaucher disease to Parkinson’s disease, and outcomes of telehealth models in genetic research and genetic counseling. Her research interests also include the impact of genetic counseling services in individuals and families with Parkinson disease, and educating the health care community about Parkinson’s disease testing and genetic counseling. She is currently a member of the Parkinson’s Working Group of the National Society of Genetic Counselors Neurogenetics Special Interest Group. In addition, she serves on the ClinGen Parkinson’s Disease Gene Curation Expert Panel and serves as an advisor to the Movement Disorder Society Task Force on Recommendations for Clinical Genetic Testing in Parkinson’s Disease.

 

Thomas F. Tropea DO, MTR
Assistant Professor CE University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine

Dr. Thomas F Tropea graduated from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency in Neurology at NY Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, fellowship and research post-doc in movement disorders at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an Assistant Professor in Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on understanding common risks among different neurodegenerative diseases, characterizing genetic subgroups of Parkinson’s disease, and optimizing disclosure of genetic results.
