ForwardThe Expert Care Experience: Role of Social Workers in Caring for People with Parkinson's
With more than 1 million people in the U.S. living with Parkinson's disease (PD), social workers will likely care for someone with Parkinson's and need to understand the nuances of this disease.
This course will describe the psychosocial challenges people living with PD and their care partners may experience throughout the progression of the disease and discuss ways in which social workers can support, advocate, and address those changing needs.
Social workers will have a special opportunity to hear from those who are personally connected to PD: a person with Parkinson's, a care partner, and a social worker working at a PD-specialized center.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the changing psychosocial needs of people living with Parkinson's disease and their support system.
- Recognize the needs of people with Parkinson’s (based on the stage of PD) and identify relevant recommendations and resources.
- Recognize the needs of care partners and identify relevant recommendations and resources.
- Identify how cultural factors and identity will impact care and caregiving.
- Apply knowledge of the numerous roles that social workers play in providing supportive interventions for people with PD.

In support of improving patient care, Parkinson's Foundation is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Social Workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Parkinson’s Foundation is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Parkinson’s Foundation maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.75 ASWB continuing education credits.
