Physical Therapy Models of Care and AssessmentChapter Two explores current physical therapy models of care and assessment to meet the growing needs of people with Parkinson's throughout the continuum.

This chapter also reviews strategies to overcome common barriers to exercise and physical activity in people with Parkinson’s along with the assessment-based wearable technologies used by clinicians to develop effective rehabilitation strategies and interventions for balance and gait disorders.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this chapter, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the elements and goals of a secondary prevention approach as a model of care in the physical therapy treatment of persons with Parkinson's. 
  2. Identify barriers to exercise and physical activity and apply strategies to enhance, motivate, and incorporate exercise/physical activity into everyday life. 
  3. Apply the core set of outcome measures recommended by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy EDGE (Evidence Database to Guide Effectiveness) Task Force in the care of persons with Parkinson's.
  4. Identify and judge the merit of assessment-based wearable technologies used to design therapeutic interventions for balance and gait disorders in PD.
