Overview of Parkinson’s Disease & the Role of Exercise and Neuroplasticity
Chapter One provides an overview of Parkinson's disease (PD), including the motor and non-motor features, medical and surgical management options, as well as the impact and role of exercise-induced neuroplasticity on brain health and function.
At the end of this chapter, the learner will be able to:
- Identify and define the cardinal features of Parkinson’s and common motor and non-motor symptoms.
- Categorize the pharmacology and physiology of antiparkinsonian medications and identify the potential benefits and contraindications of surgical treatments in Parkinson’s.
- Define neuroplasticity, identify the role of neurorehabilitation in early-stage PD, and examine the impact of exercise on improving motor performance in PD.
