Caring for Your Patients with Atypical Parkinsonism

Often misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, atypical Parkinsonian syndromes have distinct considerations for care.  

The Parkinson's Foundation and CurePSP developed this free online course to provide an overview of the complexity of the common journeys of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and corticobasal syndrome/degeneration (CBS/CBD) and tangible treatment options to better care for people with atypical Parkinsonism.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Recognize the epidemiology, symptoms, pathophysiology, and diagnosis process of three atypical Parkinsonian syndromes: multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and corticobasal degeneration/syndrome (CBD/CBS).
  • Discuss current medical treatments and upcoming disease-modifying therapies for MSA, PSP, and CBD/CBS.
  • Identify five non-pharmacological supportive or therapeutic care modalities that can be used to manage symptoms of atypical Parkinsonism. 
  • Integrate relevant approaches to improve communication with people with atypical Parkinsonism and their care partners. 
  • Review the roles and incorporation of different care team members in the interprofessional assessment, treatment and formation of care plan for patients with atypical Parkinsonism.
